How to: Install a ESDI hard drive controller card.
Solution:
Observe ESD considerations, and install the legacy ESDI hard drive controller card.
WARNING: Electrical shock hazard! Make sure the power is turned off and the external power cables have been disconnected before removing the computer cover.
CAUTION 1: This task should be performed by a qualified computer technician.
CAUTION 2: Please observe steps to reduce the potential damage to computer components from electrostatic discharge.
NOTE 1: Skip steps 1) through 12) if you are installing a new ESDI hard drive controller and cannot boot your computer from a hard drive.
NOTE 2: Refer to the ESDI hard drive controller adapter card manual to determine which IRQ values and I/O addresses can be set using jumpers on the card.
NOTE 3: ESDI hard drive controllers cannot co-exist with active IDE or EIDE hard drive controllers in a computer. If there is an active IDE or EIDE hard drive in the computer, you will need to disable it before installing the ESDI hard drive controller
NOTE 4: Some ESDI hard drive controller adapter card also include a floppy drive controller. If you are not going to use the floppy drive controller on the ESDI hard drive controller adapter card, disable the floppy drive controller before installing the adapter card. Refer to the adapter card manual or contact next-level support for further instructions.
1) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
2) Select 'Settings' and select 'Control Panel'. (The 'Control Panel' window appears.)

3) Double-click the 'System' icon. (The 'System Properties' dialog box appears.)
4) Click the 'Device Manager' tab, and select the 'View devices by type' radio button. (The system devices are displayed.)

5) Select the 'Computer' icon, and click 'Properties'.

6) Click 'Properties'. (The 'Computer Properties' dialog box appears.)
7) Select the 'Interrupt request (IRQ)' radio button. (The dialog box lists the devices with interrupt assignments and radio button name.

8) Record which interrupts are not assigned.
9) Select the 'Input/output (I/O addresses)' radio button. (The dialog box lists the devices with memory addresses and radio button name.)
10) Click the 'Reserve Resources' tab, and do the following:
NOTE: If you attempt to reserve a resource currently assigned to a device, a 'Resource Conflict Warning' message will appear stating if you reserve a resource in use that a resource conflict may occur. If possible, choose a different value to reserve.
a) Enter a IRQ value to be used by the ESDI hard drive controller in the 'Value' list box, and click 'OK'.
NOTE: If more than one IRQ is needed for the ESDI hard drive controller, repeat step 10)a).
b) Select the 'Input/Output Range (I/O Range)' radio button, and click 'Add...'. (The 'Edit Resource Settings' dialog box appears.)
c) Enter a I/O Range address to be used by the ESDI hard drive controller in the 'Value box, and click 'OK'.

NOTE: If more than one I/O Range address is needed for the ESDI hard drive controller, repeat step 10)c).
d) Click 'OK' to close the 'Computer Properties' dialog box.
11) Shut down Windows 95, and turn off the computer.
12) Disconnect the external power cord from computer.
13) Remove the computer cover.
14) Set the jumpers on the card to match the device resources reserved in steps 10a) through 10d).
NOTE: Refer to the adapter card manual for proper jumper settings.
15) Determine the expansion slot type for the serial card.
16) Align the ESDI controller card parallel with an empty slot matching the card, and insert the card into the slot.
CAUTION: Keep the card vertical while inserting it into an expansion, and be careful not to bend the adapter card board. Bending the adapter card board can damage the circuitry.
17) Connect the ribbon data cable to the connector on ESDI hard drive controller card and to the large connector on the rear of the hard drives (red or blue side to Pin1).
18) Replace the computer cover.
19) Reconnect the external computer power cord, and turn on the computer. (Allow Windows 95 to load normally.)
NOTE: Windows 95 will auto-detect the new ESDI hard drive controller card and auto configure system drivers for the controller.
